A valid identity card is sufficient for a number of countries. These countries are the member states of the European Union, some neighbouring countries and some distant countries that are tourist draws.
The general rule is that identity cards (including identity documents of children) must be valid at least until the date of return – if the date of return is already determined.
Other rules apply for certain destinations. People over 75 years of age who want to travel abroad have to have a valid identity card. Once you have reached the age of 75, you are no longer required to renew your identity card. That’s no problem as long as you don’t leave Belgium, but if you want to travel abroad, you do have to have an identity card with a valid expiry date. If necessary you have to request a new identity card.
Damaged travel documents, e.g. a passport with a torn cover, an identity card with a crack or an electronic identity card of which the chip is missing, can be regarded as invalid by the competent Belgian or foreign authorities. The risk of denied access to the flight or the territory of the country of destination lies entirely with the travellers. We therefore advise you to have damaged travel documents replaced before the start of your trip.
An international passport (the wine red booklet) is a booklet containing your identity data. An international passport is accepted as a valid travel document by all countries in the world and is required if you travel to those countries for which an identity card is not sufficient.
We also advise you to check the expiry date of your passport. A lot of countries require your passport to still be valid for quite some time (e.g. 6 months) at the moment you leave the country. Be sure to request a new passport in time, taking into account the time needed to obtain one.
How can you request an international passport?
a) The normal procedure
You can request a new international passport (or its extension) with your local authorities. You need to bring four recent passport photos, your identity card and your old passport (if you already had one). The standard period for delivery of your passport is three weeks. The price depends on the municipality. Passports are always valid for 5 years.
b) The emergency procedure
If you can’t wait three weeks and have to travel abroad unexpectedly, you can opt for the quick procedure. In that case, the delivery period is approximately three working days and the cost is higher.
A lot of countries, especially those in high-risk areas, will deny you access if you don’t have an internationally recognised certificate of vaccination against a number of diseases, the so-called “yellow booklet”.
The obligatory and/or recommended vaccinations are indicated on the introductory pages of each destination. Different rules apply if you have already travelled to an area where cholera, malaria or yellow fever occurs. We advise you in any case to consult your general practitioner. You can also contact the Travelfoon of the Institute of Tropical Medicine at 0900 101 10.
There are no Belgian or international procedures or forms regulating parental permission for travelling with minors.
If a child travels with one of the parents, this parent is free to take a written permission of the other parent, which can be certified by the municipal authorities.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends a parental permission if the child travels on its own or is accompanied by persons other than the parents. Belgian travellers can at all times request information from the embassy or the consulate of the country of destination with respect to any additional documents required for travelling with children. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs gives the advice to certainly seek information if the child travels alone.
