Get a tan in winter

Is it too cold over here? Then book your flights to Banjul right away and enjoy a revitalising dose of sun! When it is winter at home, the Gambia’s climate is at its best: pleasantly warm and not a drop of rain. Sanyang Beach is definitely on top of the list of most beautiful beaches. Due to its white sands, palm trees and exotic beach bar it is also called Paradise Beach. If you are looking for peace and quiet, you can go to the Brufut or Cape Point beaches. Kotu beach is a bit more lively, but the most popular beach is situated in the seaside resort of Kololi: the Senegambia Strip packed with bars, hotels, restaurants and night clubs.

Africa in all its glory

No better place to soak up the typical atmosphere than at a local market. The largest city of the country, Serrekunda is known for its vibrant daily market. From vegetables to textiles and goats… In this maze of narrow streets you can buy literally everything. Banjul’s smaller Royal Albert Market also has many things to offer, from spices, fish and live chickens to colourful paintings. The Craft Market in Kotu is the best place to pick up souvenirs such as African wood carvings, djembes, jewels, colourful bags… Haggling is a must at the Gambian markets and, while being very charming, they can also be a bit overwhelming. It is thus no superfluous luxury to take a guide with you.

Hundreds of bird species

The Gambia does not have large wildlife parks as do other African countries, but it is heaven on earth for birdwatchers. Due to its diverse habitats – forests, beaches, mangroves… – about 600 different species have been counted here, both African birds and European migratory birds that spend the winter here. The best places to watch birds are Baobab Island, Tanbi Wetlands National Park and its bird sanctuary, Bijilo Forest Park and Abuko Nature Reserve. Relics of slavery

As beautiful as the Gambia may be, it is unfortunately marked by a history of slavery. An estimated 3 million people from this area were sold as slaves to the Americas. Before they left, they were first kept on Kunta Kinteh Island or James Island for a few weeks. You can still visit the island and the ruins of the fort from 1651. The National Museum of Banjul, the Slavery museum in Juffureh, Georgetown or Janjanbureh prompt you to dwell on this dark page from the Gambia’s past for a brief moment.

Crossing the border to Senegal

The Gambia is completely surrounded by Senegal and with a flight to Banjul you are just a stone’s throw away from a trip to this neighbouring country. You can go on safari in Fathala Wildlife Reserve, right across the border, for example. Whether you go on a game drive looking for giraffes, rhinoceroses and buffaloes or go for a guided walk with lions, it will certainly be an unforgettable experience.
